Donald Trump and President Gustavo Petro have intensified the volume in their verbal conflict, increasing tensions in their relations following American military units struck Venezuela in an operation to oust President Nicolás Maduro from his position.
"He runs narcotics facilities and production sites and is not going to be doing it very long," Trump added.
Addressing the press over the weekend, the American leader hinted at comparable military action towards the South American nation, stating the country is also "very ill" and “run by a problematic figure involved in producing cocaine and selling it to America."
While Colombia stands as the leading source of the narcotic, authorities have found no indication linking President Gustavo Petro, who was elected in 2022, is directly tied to the business.
The country for decades served as a close partner of the United States in the campaign against narcotics trade and received bipartisan support in Washington, however, the relationship have soured dramatically after Trump assumed the presidency.

Petro, once a member of a left-wing insurgent group who demobilised in the last century, categorically refuted the accusations. "I am no illegitimate and certainly not a drug trafficker," he affirmed.
"Trump speaks without information. End the false accusations," he wrote online.

He passed a period in his early life as a member in the left-wing M-19 guerrilla group though it is believed that he never engaged in fighting. Upon leaving the group, he participated in creating the constitutional rewrite in the early 90s subsequently becoming a prominent senator. He was mayor of the capital city before being elected the presidency.
"I pledged to abstain from using a gun ... but for the homeland I will take up weapons once more," he vowed.
Colombia's defense chief announced that Petro's security detail had been reinforced.
A segment of Colombia’s conservative opposition have allied themselves with Trump's stance, however, leaders from across Colombian politics have rejected the notion of an invasion targeting Colombia.
The US withdrew his travel authorization after he encouraged US military personnel to ignore any illegal orders. Months later, the US enacted asset freezes against the president, his wife and a number of close collaborators.
At the same time while America bolstered its forces in the Caribbean and bombing alleged narcotics traffickers to put pressure on Venezuela’s Maduro, American military assets executed operations on boats in Pacific waters off the Colombian coast.
