New York City Mayor Mayor Adams declared his intention to endorse former Governor Cuomo in the forthcoming mayoral race, despite months of disagreements between the two Democratic figures.
Just last month, Adams had lashed out at Cuomo, labeling him a “deceptive figure and a liar” and accusing him of having “a career of pushing Black candidates out of races.” Yet, in a recent statement, Adams made a U-turn, stating he now intends to appear with the former governor in areas where he maintains significant backing.
“It's essential to energize the communities of color that have suffered from urban displacement on how important this race is,” the mayor commented.
He added, “Residents have seen their rents increase due to neighborhood changes and they have been ignored in those neighborhoods, and I plan to visit to those communities and talk directly with community leaders and organizations and I’m going to walk with the former governor in those neighborhoods and get them involved.”
The election battle has so far been shaped by the contest between Cuomo and democratic socialist his main rival, whose rise in the polls has made headlines globally and represented hopes for a rejuvenated leftwing of the Democrats.
During a recent candidate forum, both Mamdani and GOP candidate Curtis Sliwa stated they would decline Adams’s endorsement if extended.
Earlier this year, the mayor had begun his re-election campaign as an independent after facing federal corruption charges which were later dropped in return for Adams’s cooperation with government enforcement actions across the city.
During a separate media briefing on Thursday, Adams responded to reporters asking about the endorsement plan by stating, “I'm meeting Andrew this evening.”
The announcement came a day after the two politicians were spotted attending a game side-by-side at the the NBA team's first game at the famous arena, which took place right after a contentious mayoral debate.
