According to the UN refugee agency, over 60,000 individuals have left the city in Sudan of el-Fasher, which was captured by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces over the weekend.

Reports indicate mass executions and atrocities as RSF fighters entered the city after an 18-month encirclement characterized by famine and intense shelling.

The movement of those running from the fighting towards the town of Tawila, roughly 80km (50 miles) to the west of el-Fasher, had grown in the last several days, per United Nations refugee agency spokesperson.

Refugees were narrating shocking tales of abuses, featuring rape, and the agency was struggling to secure enough shelter and nourishment for them.

All children was affected by undernourishment, she added.

Estimates suggest that more than 150,000 people are currently stranded in el-Fasher, which had been the army's remaining stronghold in the western part of Darfur.

The RSF has rejected widespread accusations that the killings in el-Fasher are driven by ethnicity and mirror a practice of the Arab militia groups attacking non-Arab populations.

However the paramilitary group has detained one of its members, Abu Lulu, who has been accused of extrajudicial killings.

The organization released footage depicting the member's detention subsequent to verification that he was behind the death of numerous non-combatants in the vicinity of el-Fasher.

Digital platform has acknowledged that it has suspended the account linked to Lulu. Uncertainty exists whether he had operated the profile in his name.

Sudan was thrown into a domestic fighting in April 2023 following a intense struggle for power erupted between its military and the RSF.

This has caused a famine and allegations of ethnic cleansing in the western Darfur region.

More than 150,000 individuals have been killed in the conflict around the country, and approximately 12 million have fled their residences in what the United Nations has called the world's largest humanitarian crisis.

The capture of el-Fasher strengthens the regional separation in the country, with the RSF now in command of the western region and significant areas of adjacent Kordofan to the southern area, and the military controlling the main city, Khartoum, central and eastern regions along the Red Sea.

The competing factions had been allies - gaining control together in a coup in 2021 - but split over an globally supported plan to advance to civilian leadership.
