Individuals Stopping Slimming Injections Regain Weight Four Times Faster Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis reveals that people who come off popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on shed pounds far faster than those who halt conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Findings released in a major medical journal shows that while obese individuals can lose about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Individuals purchasing such drugs need to be cognizant of the risk of rapid weight regain when the therapy is stopped," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain implies a reversion to starting weight within about one and a half years.

Analyzing Therapies

The analysis, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of these new drugs with older methods.

The team emphasize that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally have a less rapid weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

The Reason for the Fast Regain

Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the drugs is key to understanding the accelerated weight return.

GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls appetite.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating much more probable."

A Chronic Issue?

Health authorities suggest the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts argue that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment might need to be ongoing.

This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "highlight the chronic character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Experiences

Users who have stopped the jabs explain a intense return of cravings.

"I experienced a switch flipping and you're instantly starving," described a patient.

The struggle is compounded if users have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Significant Adoption

Figures indicate that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.

  • Use is higher among females than men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, clinicians caution that while the jabs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and long-term success relies on combined lifestyle management.
