Israelis have gathered throughout the country to commemorate the second anniversary since the Hamas-led offensive on 7 October 2023, as negotiations continued in Egypt over a conclusion to the war in the Gaza Strip.
The assault saw in excess of 1,200 people killed and 251 others abducted away to Gaza as prisoners. It was the single most lethal day for Jewish people since the Holocaust.
Israel responded by launching a military offensive in Gaza which has claimed more than 67,000 people, according to the region's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its numbers are considered trustworthy by the UN and other international bodies.
"Our bloodthirsty opponents have caused great damage, but they have not broken us," the prime minister remarked on that day.
He also pledged to "accomplish all the aims of the war: the return of all the kidnapped, the elimination of the Hamas administration and the promise that Gaza will not pose a threat to Israel".
The Israeli government delayed official memorials until mid-October - after the completion of the festive season - but ceremonies still occurred throughout the country on that day.
A remembrance service for the loved ones of people killed in the Hamas incident was held in the coastal city. Arranged by the families themselves, it was televised on Israeli TV networks.
Some time earlier, a silent tribute was held across the country.
Meanwhile, both sides' negotiating teams gathered in the North African Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh for a follow-up session of third-party negotiations to discuss the terms of the agreement.
A prominent Palestinian official involved in the talks indicated that an night meeting of negotiations began at 19:00 Cairo time.
The official explained the day's discussions finished without concrete outcomes, because of conflicting views over the suggested Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over assurances Hamas seeks to ensure Israel does not recommence fighting after the initial stage of the arrangement.
He commented that the talks are "tough and have still not achieve any major advancement," but mentioned that mediators are working hard to narrow the disparities between the two sides.
In the city's memorial area that day, young a woman - whose sibling survived the assault on the outdoor event, where many attendees were killed and dozens more were abducted by Hamas gunmen - told: "No place seems like home any longer and until each abducted person come back no one will have peace of mind."
"When we see everyone home once more, we can relax anew. Then we can start to rebuild," she continued.
Outside the prime minister's residence in Jerusalem, people assembled to show their support for the families of the captives. Israel says nearly fifty continue in captivity in Gaza, twenty of whom are believed to be living.
Demonstrator a participant remarked: "We must do every compromise needed for the abducted to return. But we truly desire guarantees that we will be protected."
Opinion polls now consistently show that about 70% of Israeli citizens prefer the war to end in as payment for the liberation of the captives.
At the site of the music event, grieving people came together to pay their respects.
From the site, the sound of aerial bombardments and shelling could be detected just a short distance away in Gaza, where observers said the severe Israeli bombardment continued.
In the urban center, attacks were documented in the early hours of that day in the west side neighborhood, sector and Nasr neighbourhoods and in the east side neighbourhood of the community, as well Shati refugee camp to the northwest.
"As the night falls, the dread comes with it," evacuated Gaza City resident a mother, whose young son was killed by an Israeli bombing last year, explained.
"My family are afraid of the air strikes. During nighttime we are sleeping together, embracing, especially my little child who rests his face on me the entire evening."
"Every second we monitor the news to see the situation. And I'm concerned that this halt will not be finalized and that the conflict will come back to us."
The medical facility in Gaza City announced it had received the bodies of half dozen people by the daytime, including three who died in an Israeli strike in the southern area.
A different healthcare center in the southern city of Khan Younis indicated another two fatalities had been transported. A person was killed by Israeli troops while looking for help to the southern area, medical staff reported.
The region's health ministry said a significant number of the {territ
