This Oscar-nominated actor Diane Ladd, a Hollywood veteran left us 89 years old.
The actress, whose roles featured Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, left this world in her residence in California’s Ojai. This announcement was shared in a statement shared by her child, Oscar-winning actor Laura Dern, her daughter.
Dern, who appeared with her mom in a number of films such as Wild at Heart and Rambling Rose, referred to her as “my amazing hero plus my special gift being my mom”, noting that she was by her side when she passed.
“She was the most wonderful daughter, mother, grandmother, performer, creative and empathetic spirit that felt like a dream come true,” she wrote. “We were blessed to have her. She is flying with her angels now.”
The start of her career featured minor parts in television programs like Perry Mason whereas the 1970s featured her performing next to the legendary Jack Nicholson in the film Chinatown.
During that year, 1974, she appeared with Ellen Burstyn in the Martin Scorsese praised film Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore. Her role brought Ladd her first Oscar nomination for best supporting actress.
During the eighties, she appeared in crime thriller Black Widow as well as humorous film National Lampoon’s holiday comedy while also joining the show Alice, a television series derived from the film Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore.
During the next ten years, she received an additional supporting actress Academy Award nomination for her performance in Lynch’s Wild at Heart where she played the mother of her biological child Laura Dern’s role. The next year she obtained a further nomination for her acting in the film Rambling Rose that also featured Laura Dern.
“This was the film that the late Princess Diana selected as her very favorite, and she invited Laura and I to London for a royal premiere and a party for us,” Ladd said of Rambling Rose. “She sat with us, holding both our hands, and crying, watching us perform.”
That decade featured performances in comedy Cemetery Club, a film joining her again with Ellen Burstyn, Primary Colors, a political comedy, featuring John Travolta and Payne’s the movie Citizen Ruth where she played Dern’s mother another time. Those years also brought her nominations for Emmy Awards for roles on Dr Quinn, Grace Under Fire, a sitcom and Touched by an Angel.
She persisted in performing with her daughter in dramatic comedies the film Daddy and Them, David Lynch’s the movie Inland Empire and Mike White’s satirical show Enlightened. She was also seen next to actress Sandra Bullock in 28 Days, a movie, Anthony Hopkins, a legend in that movie and with Jennifer Lawrence in Joy, a biographical drama.
Subsequent TV appearances consisted of Ray Donovan plus Young Sheldon.
Ladd also wrote and oversaw the humorous movie Mrs Munck featuring herself and former husband actor Bruce Dern. “Bruce is an excellent performer,” she mentioned. “I’m privileged to have directed him on a project. In fact, I stand as the only woman ever to helm a film with her ex. I make a joke: ‘I advise females, if you seek payback, guide your former spouse.’ Though I’m just teasing.”
She was additionally a relative of the great Tennessee Williams, whom she described as “a significant impact in my life”.
During 2018, doctors misdiagnosed Ladd with a pulmonary condition and told she had just six months to live but she regained full health when her daughter transferred her to a new hospital.
“If you can take your pain and prevent it from festering like an injury, instead use it to explore, to make the path clearer for personal and collective growth, then you are succeeding,” Ladd remarked.
