Antony Price, the influential UK-based designer who crafted some of the most iconic looks worn by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has sadly died aged 80.

His reputation was built on his sculptured silhouettes and performative fashion, most notably the pastel suits that featured in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's classic music video for "their hit Rio".

"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement across their platforms."

His passing follows just weeks after he debuted his latest collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. Artist Lily Allen modelled a dress evoking the famous black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" made famous by Princess Diana.

A Lasting Legacy

Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price moved to London at the start of the 1960s to study at the renowned Royal College of Art.

A year after graduating, he commenced his career designing menswear at the company Stirling Copper and was behind the form-fitting, button-fly pants that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger sported during The Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter" tour in the late sixties.

He founded his own label in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show opened with looks from model Jerry Hall, who also wore the bridal gown Price specifically designed for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.

Collaborations with Icons

A frequent collaborator of David Bowie, Price designed the memorable jacket the singer wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His characteristic talent to fuse elements of men's and women's fashion along with his expert craftsmanship in shaping body-hugging looks established him as a "true original," in the words of the UK's fashion authority.

During the nineties, he began working on ensembles for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, which included a number of outfits for her US tour after assuming the title.

With a vocation that covered more than five decades, Price presented his final runway show in London just last month in partnership with the design house 16Arlington.

  • Architectural Forms: Central to his design philosophy.
  • Theatrical Flair: Influencing music videos and stagewear.
  • Genre-Blending Design: Blurring lines between clothing for men and women.
  • Clients from Stage to Palace: Spanning iconic musicians and members of the royal family.

The fashion world laments the passing to a authentic original whose influence on the visual landscape of music remains profoundly felt.
