A comprehensive rescue and recovery effort is actively under way in the Caribbean region for a duo of lost sailboats loaded with humanitarian supplies en route from the Mexican coast to Havana.
Authorities in Mexico has dispatched naval assets and reconnaissance aircraft to find the Friendship and Tigger Moth, which were transporting at least nine total sailors, according to a military release.
The ships had been scheduled to reach Havana on Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been no communication from them and no confirmation of their safe arrival, authorities reported.
Cuba has leaned on humanitarian shipments from Mexico over the past few weeks, as the country grapples with widespread power outages across the country.
"Both skippers and their teams are seasoned mariners, and both vessels are fitted with suitable navigational gear and signalling equipment," a representative involved in the effort commented.
The nine-person crew are citizens of Poland, France, Cuba and the US. Mexico said it has opened communications with rescue coordination centers from those nations along with their embassy officials.
"We are collaborating completely with the officials and continue to be hopeful in the ability of the crews to safely arrive in Havana," the spokesperson added.
Previously that week, the government in Havana publicly celebrated and greeted with fanfare a separate vessel that had carried 14 tonnes of donated goods to the country.
That vessel, called "a modern Granma" in reference to the boat in which Fidel Castro came back to Cuba to start the Cuban Revolution in the mid-20th century, carried photovoltaic panels, drugs, infant formula, bicycles and foodstuffs.
Charity groups and individuals have largely spearheaded efforts to bring essential supplies to Cuba starting at the turn of the year, a period which saw a energy blockade on the country began.
The United Nations have since warned of ""critical" shortages of supplies, with over 50,000 operations postponed in Cuba amid energy rationing.
Political pressure have increased over the past months, with remarks from various leaders highlighting the delicate state of relations.
Responding to certain comments, a senior official from Cuba insisted that "the political system of Cuba is not subject to discussion."
Reports suggest that initial phases of negotiations had begun, although their present status remains unclear.
The maritime authorities stated it was dedicated to using the full extent of its capabilities at its command to discover the sailboats and guarantee the well-being of the people on board.
To date, there has been no official comment on the lost ships by the Cuban leadership.
