The creative mastermind never anticipated that his new science-fiction series would become a massive hit. “God bless the fans,” he states. “I did not foresee the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”
Now that Season 1 of the acclaimed series wrapping up—and the next chapter already in development—Gilligan and his team recently discussed the fan response and whether it will shape the storyline of Pluribus.
One could easily to get swayed by the widespread acclaim and audience predictions regarding Pluribus. He is doing his best to steer clear of all that.
“It feels like an endless supply of your favorite dessert and being in a state of bliss,” he says. “It's the greatest thing, but I hear about it through word of mouth, and that's intentional. Not once have I Googled myself, nor do I ever want to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a deep trap I know I would get lost in and then I'd be living in squalor from the hardware store and I'd be stuck in my living room.”
In spite of trying to stay away, there’s no way to avoid the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The best he and his team can do is to take it in stride and try not to let it alter the course of the show.
“We make no attempt to adjust our writing,” says writer and executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not impacted by what people are saying.”
“Better to keep our noses to the grindstone,” Gilligan concludes.
Considering Gilligan and his team are not listening by audience theories, does that mean they have already decided how Pluribus will finally conclude? Essentially yes… with some caveats.
“We've developed some interesting ideas about where the show might end up,” he states. “yet we stand ready to discard a decent plan for a more brilliant plan. That has held us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we get a better idea and I suspect we'll be doing that.”
On the other hand, if all else fails, Gordon Smith has a rather amusing idea to fall back on.
“I keep pitching that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and the characters are inside it,” Smith quips, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”
Alternatively, why not reference the classics?
“I want Carol to awaken next to Bob Newhart,” Gilligan adds, smiling.
