Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for hours when dozens of them entered the national airspace.
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting six thousand travelers, with authorities cautioning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the atmospheric instruments launched over the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is the location of Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that this activity become not financially viable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
These airspace violations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.
Parallel situations in adjacent nations have prompted European leaders to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
